Here are some fun activities to enjoy in Gearhart, OR.

If you’re looking at property for sale in Gearhart, OR, don’t hesitate to explore all that this quaint seaside town on the Northern Oregon Coast has to offer. A lovely town located just three miles north of Seaside, Gearhart is teeming with fun activities and attractions. Here are 10 things to do in Gearhart, OR.

1. Play golf

There are two public golf courses in Gearhart: Gearhart Golf Links and Highlands Golf Course. Gearhart Golf Links, an 18-hole golf course that opened in 1892, is the oldest golf course in the Northwest. It is located just three blocks from the Pacific Ocean. Highlands Golf Course is a 9-hole, executive-length golf course that offers a challenging golfing experience. Both of these golf courses are open to the public, so there are no membership or maintenance fees.

2. Catch your dinner

Dig for razor clams at a local beach, or fish for salmon or sturgeon in the ocean, river or bay in the fall and winter. Check with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife for more information on seasons, limits, and licenses.

3. Go shopping

The charming center of Gearhart is ideal for shopping or just browsing. It’s one of the few places in the US where mom and pop operations haven’t been put out of business by commercialization. Gearhart is home to antique shops, home and garden shops, an old-fashioned grocery store, and an art gallery.

4. Take a hike

There are lots of wonderful parks in the Gearhart, OR area, where you can enjoy scenic hikes. Local parks with myriad nature trails to traverse include Ecola State Park, Fort Stevens State Park, and Oswald West State Park.

5. Hit the beach

If you’d like to spend your days listening to the sounds of the waves crashing and inhaling the fresh ocean air, visit Del Rey Beach. Located in Gearhart, Del Rey Beach is a gorgeous, undeveloped beach where you can take a walk, fly a kite, go surfing or simply relax and enjoy the scenery.

6. Go kayaking

The Northern Coast of Oregon is home to excellent kayaking spots, from the open ocean to rivers to scenic inlets and bays. Broadway Park in Seaside offers access to the Neawanna River for kayaking. Nehalem River and Nehalem Bay are also great places to go kayaking.

7. Feed seals at the Seaside Aquarium

Buy seal food for about a dollar and then feed the seals at the Seaside Aquarium, one of the oldest aquariums on the West Coast. Be prepared to get splashed!

8. Go whale watching

In the winter and spring, you can watch gray whales migrate along the coast in Gearhart. A great whale watching spot in the area is Ecola State Park. During whale watching season, there are trained volunteers on duty at the park from 10am to 1pm in order to help visitors spot whales and provide them with information about their migration.

9. Visit Youngs River Falls

Check out Youngs River Falls, a 65-foot water fall on the Youngs River that was discovered during the Lewis & Clark expedition. In the summer, you can swim in the pool below these scenic waterfalls.

10. Get a dose of local history

While the Northern Oregon Coast is famed for its natural attractions, there are also plenty of activities for history buffs to enjoy. For example, at the Lewis & Clark National Historical Park, visitors can explore a museum, historical exhibits, visitor center, and reconstructed fort, all of which are joined by trails that wind through rainforest and wetlands.
